A Night in Bethlehem

Thank you to everyone who helped with St. John's living nativity "A Night in Bethlehem". It was a wonderful, warmer evening with lots of smiles, angels, wise-looking men, and a few very vocal animals. Praise be to God!

Hanging of the Greens!

St. John's is ready for Advent! Thanks to the MANY helpers who gathered Sunday afternoon, the church looks very festive. About 30 folks helped decorate -- things happened quickly! When all was finished, we sat down together for a wonderful lunch! Thank you all!

A NIGHT IN BETHLEHEM

The plans are in motion! Don't be left behind as St. John's Lutheran Church presents A NIGHT IN BETHLEHEM, a living nativity. Attend the Children's Christmas Program at 5PM, Sunday, December 11, followed by cookies and cider at the Bethlehem Bakery! Be a part of this wonderful, fun and blessed evening as you are taken back to the birth of the Savior in Bethlehem. Come in costume and join in the celebration!

Lutheran World Relief In-Gathering

The boxes of health kits, school kits, sewing kits, and quilts keep coming! The week of filling the trailer is half over and many surrounding churches have made the trip to Norfolk to add to the shipment. Thank you to Pat & Warren Monson who make sure there is someone available to help with the loading and to offer a cup of coffee and a treat! Not only is St. John's blessed, we pray also that the items being collected by Lutheran World Relief find their way to the hands of those who need them most.

Special Congregational Meeting

A special Congregational Meeting is set for Sunday, November 13, at 9:45 AM. To address a staffing need, the Church Council is recommending that the congregation approve the appointment of a call committee for the purpose of calling a part-time assistant pastor and that a plan for funding this position be created. A forum to discuss this matter will be held Sunday, November 6, at 9:45 AM in the sanctuary. Please plan on attending these very important meetings.

Sullivan Family Benefit

The Sullivan Family Benefit is this Sunday, November 6, beginning at St. John's with a breakfast at 9:45 AM in the Fellowship Hall. The silent auction baskets will be on display Saturday evening through breakfast. For lunch, the fundraiser moves to the VFW on 4th St. and Braasch Ave. Lunch will be served from 11 AM -- 2:30 PM. All proceeds will go directly to the Sullivan family.

Music Day

Our first “Music Day” will be held for all 1st-6th graders in Sunday School on October 30th. Meet in the big Music Room downstairs to be part of the action! Students will share their music at the 11 a.m. worship service that same Sunday. Mark your family calendar!

Majesty Choir Cantata Practice

MAJESTY CHOIR CANTATA practice begins next week, Thursday, Oct. 27. If you would like to “try out” the choir for a short time, now’s your chance! Cantata practices are each Thursday from 6:30 -7:15 PM. Regular practices will continue after 7:15 -8 PM.

Sullivan Family Benefit

SAVE THE DATE A Fundraiser to benefit the Sullivan Family is being planned for Sunday, November 6. Robert & Katlinn Sullivan, along with little sister McKenna, welcomed baby Keagan to their family prematurely. The proceeds of the benefit will help defray hospital costs. Watch for details!

Orphan Grain Train Class

Orphan Grain Train Class started Sunday, October 23. There are still 3 weeks of classes left. Meet in the sanctuary at 9:45 to learn about the history and functions of this organization.

Michael Taylor Family Benefit

The Benefit for the Michael Taylor Family is Sunday, Oct. 2, beginning at 12:15 pm with a BBQ lunch. Be sure to browse the silent auction items, too! Bake sale goodies and raffle tickets will also be available to purchase. This proud Marine is a husband and father to three young children. Please be generous as all proceeds will help defray costs incurred during Mike's fight with brain cancer. See you there!

BIG WEEKEND AT ST. JOHN'S!

Be sure to get in on all that's going on at St. John's this weekend! Saturday evening service is at 6 PM, with the first Reverse Offering! You've heard about it -- now it's time to see how it works! After service, spend a little time browsing the silent auction baskets donated to raise funds for the Nebraska Lutheran Campus Ministry in Norfolk. Bidding continues through Sunday afternoon when Saints & Sinners perform their final concert at 3PM followed by a homemade apple pie and ice cream social. Winners of the silent auction will be announced at that time. Hope you can join us for all the fun!

8th Grade Confirmation Classes begin October 5th

Welcome to a new year of confirmation instruction at St. John’s! 8th grade classes begin Wednesday, Oct. 5th from 4-5 p.m. at the church. Students in this unit will need to bring their Bible, a writing utensil, and a spiral notebook to class each week. If your student needs a Bible, please let us know; we’ll be happy to provide one. Mark your calendars, 8th graders!

7th Grade Confirmation Classes Begin September 28th

10 Commandments class begins for all 7th grade students on September 28th! We meet at the church from 5-6 p.m. Athletes, please make sure you complete the necessary paperwork with your coaches so you are excused from practice on Wednesdays. Students need to bring their Bible, a writing utensil and a spiral notebook to class each week. If you need a Bible let us know! Please mark your family calendar with this date!

"Wanted by God: Pioneers!" RALLY DAY

RALLY DAY IS ON ITS WAY! Join the fun and help us get your new Sunday School year off to a GREAT START! Wear your jeans, your boots, your cowboy hat & kerchief on September 11th, and meet us in the church sanctuary at 9:45 a.m. for a WILD TIME in the OLD WEST! Rope a horse, hunt for outlaws and have your picture taken at the jail! Get in line at the chuckwagon for some chow and sarsaparilla! All families and friends of St. John's are WELCOME!

Norfolk Food Pantry

SEPTEMBER IS FOOD PANTRY MONTH FOR ST. JOHN'S!
In support of the Norfolk Food Pantry, St. John's stocks the shelves and provides volunteers to help during September. All non-perishable items are welcome, including peanut butter, jelly, cereals, all pastas, mac & cheese, pancake mix, syrup, canned soups, fruits and vegetables. Paper items such as toilet paper are also needed. Garden produce will also be accepted. Please remember the volunteers and those benefitting from your donations in your prayers!

SUNDAY SCHOOL HELPERS NEEDED! Would you like an opportunity to change God’s world one child at a time? Catch the excitement and join our Sunday School staff! All our Team Leaders are in place for Sunday School, but we need your helping hands to fill out our teams for the Sept.-Dec. season--- 3 year olds/PreK needs at least 2 helpers; Kindergarten needs at least 3 helpers; Creativity Corner (1st-6th grade crafts & food) needs 1-2 helpers; Theology Theater (Bible movies & brain teasers) needs 2 helpers; and Community Life (Church and community projects done during the Sunday School hour) needs 2 helpers! 6th Grade Confirmation Prayer Class!

Welcome to a new year of confirmation classes at St. John’s! 6th grade Prayer Class will be held from 4-5 p.m. beginning September 14th. Additional class dates are September 21st and 28th. “Share Your Prayer” Sunday will be held Oct. 2nd. All students should plan to attend BOTH services that day if possible. 5th Grade Holy Communion Classes Begin!

Holy Communion classes for any student 5th grade or older begin Wednesday, August 17th from 5-6 p.m. at the church. Additional class dates are August 24th, 31st, and September 7th, 14th, and 21st. Materials for each student's First Communion chalice are provided at no cost. First Communion Sunday is September 25th, at the worship service of your family's choice. Hope to see your student in class on the 17th!

4th grade Baptism Class Begins August 17th!

Our 3rd grade Bible Discovery class begins Wednesday, August 17th. We meet from 4-5 p.m. at the church. Additional class dates are Aug. 24th, Aug.31st, and Sept.7th. BIG JUNGLE ADVENTURE VBS FAMILY NIGHT!

WOOHOO! WHAT A NIGHT TO CELEBRATE JESUS' LOVE FOR US and OUR LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER! Our VBS students & staff gathered with family & friends for a great FAMILY NIGHT! We shared our VBS week in songs and stories at the program, then got into our LOOOOOOOONG line for some great burgers, chips, desserts and watermelon! We played the inflatable games, launched lots of water balloons, created fun sidewalk art and got REALLY wet in the waterfall sprinkler! It was a fabulous night--THANKS to everyone who helped make it possible--you are rockin', breathing examples of God's love in action!

DAY FOUR OF VBS--WOW!

Yes, it's DAY FOUR of our VBS BIG JUNGLE ADVENTURE! Tonight we had a blast praising God for the gift of Jesus, who died on the cross to save us from our sins! We finished our HALL WALL PHOTO COLLAGE, stacked up even MORE cans of food for hungry people in Norfolk, and practiced for our program tomorrow night! We beaded jewelry, made candles, and took Hez the Hippo for a ride on our colored parachutes. Now we're ready for the FAMILY NIGHT BARBECUE tomorrow at 5:30! Songs and stories, free food, inflatables, a balloon launcher and MORE! Come and share the energy of God's Spirit in action at St. John's--celebrate our BIG JUNGLE ADVENTURE with us!

JUNGLE VBS--NIGHT THREE--STILL SINGING AND SWINGING'!

WERE YOU AT VBS TONIGHT? We celebrated JESUS, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD! We're learning to share Him with other people! Our Food Pantry "Two-Can" Collection is growing every night, and we're crafting and laughing, playing and learning about God's love for us! The Snack Shack Crew had some AWESOME cookies for us tonight, too. Gotta FUEL UP and SOUND OFF if we're going to share the light of Jesus with God's World! Can't wait to see what's coming up tomorrow night---hope to see you there!
