New Jersey Bound: Youth Mission Trip 2014

This year's Nebraska Synod Youth Mission Trip will find high school youth and their adult leaders traveling east from the Nebraska Synod to join brothers and sisters in the New Jersey Synod to assist with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. On-site partners in New Jersey will be Lutheran Disaster Response personnel who are on the ground now, building relationships with people who have been impacted most by this natural disaster and setting up the infrastructure for a group such as ours to join them in service.

An Opportunity to Help Our Neighbors

Nebraska Farm Bureau is seeking volunteers for tomorrow, Thurs., Oct. 10, to assist Wayne and Dixon County Farm Bureau members in clean-up efforts following a tornado that struck the area last week.  Please contact Jessica Kolterman at 402-641-8471 or jessicak@nefb.org if you are able to volunteer. The group will be meeting at Cubby's in Wakefield at 9:00 a.m. on Thurs., Oct. 10 and heading to area farms from there. Nebraska Farm Bureau will provide a noon meal for volunteers. Please wear long pants leather gloves and work boots. There is also a need for volunteers to help fix fences that were damaged, so if you are able to assist please bring fencing tools that may be of help in that effort.

2013 VBS: Gotta Move! Underway at St. John's

Sunday night was the beginning of 2013 Vacation Bible School at St. John's Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Nebraska. Did you get in on all of the fun? If not, be sure to join us the rest of the week through Thursday night. Supper starts at 6 p.m., with opening worship starting at 6:20, sessions running from 6:55-8:10, closing worship starting at 8:10, with everything wrapping up around 8:30. Check out some pictures on our VBS facebook photo album!

VBS Penny Wars!

Penny Wars are going on during VBS as our youth raise funds for the Norfolk Food Pantry! Each age group is trying to collect as many pennies as they can for the Food Pantry. For each penny in your jar, your age group (team) earns a point. But be careful! If a SILVER coin gets in your jar (nickel, dime, quarter), you get SABOTAGED and you get that many points subtracted from your total (5 points for a nickel, 10 points for a dime, 25 points for a quarter, 50 points for a half dollar, 100 points for a Susan B. Anthony dollar). So remember to bring pennies for your jar and silver coins for the other teams jars as we GOTTA MOVE and raise money for the Norfolk Food Pantry!

What a May weekend we have had here at St. John's!  Our Saturday worship included the celebration of a baptism and, at the 8:30 am worship, we welcomed seven new members into our congregation. Later in the service we participated in the blessing of our Faith Leader class.  At the 11 am service, we confirmed fourteen students as they affirmed their baptism into Christ's family.  We are blessed!

Mark your calendars for the Congregational Meeting and vote scheduled for Wednesday evening, May 15, at 6:45 PM.  Because of the extremely busy May weekends, a mid-week evening meeting (with dinner provided by Church Council @ 6 PM) has been scheduled.  The proposed budget being presented by the Church Council eliminates the position of Christian Education Director (Tracy Nerem) and reduces the position of Director of Congregational Care & Growth (Betty Schambach) to half time.  Please be sure to make time to attend this very important meeting.

Here’s What People Are Saying about Stephen Ministry

“I thank God every day for my Stephen Minister.  I don’t know how I could have made it through the past year without her!”

“I had never felt so alone as after my wife died.  I had never opened up to anyone else before.  My Stephen Minister helped me work through the painful feelings and helped me find hope again.”

“Before I had a Stephen Minister, I struggled with whether I even believed in God.  Now I have seen God’s love face-to-face through my Stephen Minister.  It is life-changing!”

“I was able to tell my Stephen Minister things I could never have told a friend.  And she never judged me or looked down on me.  She just listened and cared.  It was just what I needed.”

On May 22, 2011, a multi-vortex EF-5 tornado ripped a 13-mile path of destruction through Joplin, Missouri and its neighboring communities. The devastation left behind was impossible to imagine, affecting thousands of residents and taking 162 lives. While the storm hit well over a year ago, much work remains to getting the community fully back on its feet.
