Christmas Eve Worship Times & Themes

St. John's Lutheran Church, located at 1300 W Benjamin Avenue in Norfolk, Nebraska, invites you to attend one, two, or all three Christmas eve worship services on Thursday, December 24, 2015.

An Illustrated Christmas kicks off the night of worship at 5 PM. All in attendance will be asked to picture yourself in the Christmas story by doodling, sketching, and sharing these images with the whole congregation. Highly interactive, using smartphones, tablets, and good ol' fashioned paper, this Christmas eve service will certainly "draw" a crowd! Candlelight & Holy Communion are also highlights of this worship service.

Festival of the Nativity continues our worship at 7 PM. This is a traditional candlelight and communion worship service as celebrated for many years at St John’s. The Christmas scriptures, sermon, hymns, and setting are both familiar and festive, as we gather and give thanks for the birth of Immanuel, God with us!

A Festival of Lessons & Carols concludes the evening at 9 PM. This worship service is both contemplative and celebratory. Seven readings of Christmas prophecy and scripture are interspersed with carols and special music. No sermon is preached. Candlelight and Communion are given with a sense of the wonder of the Word made flesh, as we celebrate the coming of the Christ child.

Everyone is invited and welcome to fully participate at St. John's this Christmas Eve. We look forward to having you join us!

Sunday School Christmas Program Dec. 12 @ 5 PM

Join the children of St. John's as they present Follow the Star, the 2015 St. John's Sunday School Christmas Program on Saturday, December 12, at 5 p.m., during our regular worship service time. A reception will follow the program & worship.

Holy Communion WILL be offered at our 5 p.m. worship service, following the Christmas program.

Follow the Star is a fun and joyous reminder of why the "wise men" of the Christmas story sought after Christ and why we still do today! More commonly referred to as the "three wise men" or "three kings," the journey of the Magi is an amazing story of obedience, faith and worship. Join the fantastic story of these three companions as they set their sights on a bright star in the heavens that would ultimately lead them to the Christ-child, the King of all kings! Characters include: King Herod, a Page, Chief Priests, Melchior (Gold), Balthazar (Frankincense), Gaspar (Myrrh), Joseph, Mary, Caravan Servants, Shepherds, and Angels. Songs include: Follow the Star, We Three Kings, Out of the Bethlehem Sky, Adore Him, Carol Medley: Joy to the World/Hark! the Herald Angels Sing/Angels We Have Heard on High.

ELCA congregations work to improve communities

Norfolk, NE (ELCA) – St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk, NE is one of nearly 10,000 congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) participating in “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015. Across the country, thousands of ELCA members are engaging in service work to make a positive change in their communities, build and deepen relationships and share God’s love.

Members of St. John’s will be working on several projects during the day including helping the Rescue Mission with some storm repairs, sizing and labeling clothes at Orphan Grain Train, cleaning up around the library and other locations, assembling school kits for international distribution, random acts of kindness and more.

The ELCA is a church deeply rooted in faith and in sharing its passion for making positive changes in the world. St. John’s joins other ELCA congregations across the country to boldly participate in God’s work in the world – restoring and reconciling communities, and pursuing peace and justice.

Tracy Meister, Coordinator for St. John’s Day of Service said she is “excited about the day of service because it gives us an opportunity to work together as the hands and feet of Jesus in our community!”  Interim Pastor David Cox added that “our community of faith includes all within our community!” More information about the ELCA is available at www.elca.org/dayofservice.

The ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with more than 3.8 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region.
Known as the church of “God’s work. Our hands,” the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA’s roots are in the writings of the German church reformer, Martin Luther.

2015 Lent Information

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ-

I love Lent better than Advent. I love the themes of Lent, the music of Lent, and the divine drama that takes place each year as we move from Ash Wednesday to Easter. Lent is all about Jesus’ Passion, the Jesus’ walk to the cross, times of prayer, deepening of faith and grace, and the beauty of the love of God for the sake of the world. Lent is about gathering together, eating a meal with each other, considering the beauty of God, and giving thanks that we are a people of God in Christ.

I invite you to come and be with others at St John’s during Lent 2015.
